Hi all - I was going through my coin collection and discovered a unique coin. I have a 1975 penny in an uncirculated set (the 1975 uncirculated coin set) and it is stamped with a very clear 'O' for the mintmark. The New Orleans mint closed in 1909... somehow this penny was struck with the wrong mint mark. Has anyone heard of this happening? I'm unable to find ANY information online. It seems it never happens or something. Also, it is a very circular, thin O and it is printed to the bottom right of the year 1975. Very close to the side of the penny.

Please let me know - any help is greatly appreciated!

heidijo27, to CCF.
Without a doubt, if it is a 1975 cent with a O mint mark the O is a D.
A picture would help as a learning tool.

A photo would be great. Otherwise we will probably all say it's a D.

It doesn't look like a mint mark, sorry to say. Only looks like a spot, maybe from water, grease, or contact with the film covering it.

The New Orleans mint reopened in 1975 for one year to strike Lincoln Cents in commemoration of the 147th anniversary of Lincoln's visit to that city. Unfortunately, the staff was new and poorly trained, and they put the mint mark in a spot never, ever used on any other Lincoln Cent in history. Upon discovery of this matter, all the employees were fired, the mint re-closed, and an attempt was made to recall the coins to remove the mint mark. They put a drop of acid on the O to dissolve it. They were then released back into circulation as if they had been struck by the Philadelphia Mint.

It's not a mint mark. It's in the wrong place. We will need a closer look to tell what it is for sure, but it's probably post mint damage ( PMD) of some sort.

heidijo27: Welcome to CCF.

I don't know why people decided they had to mess with you, but sarcasm is - after all - an under appreciated art form.

Your coin, as Fuzzy said, has a spot not a mint mark. It just happens to be roughly circular and near where a mint mark would have been placed. If you look at it with a magnifying glass from about 45 degrees you will see it's flat.

But hey, welcome to CCF and please stick around!
