I have a friend of mine going to Florida the first of March, I am going to give him some money to bring back some nickel, fifty cent rolls, How many should I get? Is nickels and fifty cents the way to go? I'm not collecting Dimes or Quarters. Thanks for any info.  |

Personally I think nickels, halves and cents are the best things to search. The nickel design hasn't changed in a while so older ones are easy to find and you may even find some silver wartime nickels. Halves don't circulate so it is possible to find silver in the halves. Also keep an eye out for halves 2002 and later as these have low mintages. Cents are also fun to search and you can usually find a few wheaties in a box (usually a few canadian too).

If you got the cash to spare and with the assumption your collections are lacking, I would go with $60 on halves and $40 on nickels. That should be enough to cover most of the basics of both sets. You'll probably be able to find all Nickels from the 70s through today (the 04/05 with the 8 versions might be tough) and probably more more than half of the halves dated 71-01. Silvers are possible, but don't be to surprised if none show up. There out there in relatively large numbers, but its all about luck. A box of Nickels might yield 3 or 4 silvers, but you might go 2 or 3 boxes without one too. You never know....

Thanks guys... Is it $10.00 for a roll of fifty cents? Also, do you think I would have better chances to go with rolls of pennies? to find wheats I mean  |

Yes halves are $10 a roll.
I'm not sure I understand your question. Better chances will pennies than what? Like I said before I usually find a few in a box.

I've found roughly the same number of wheat cents in boxes here in Canada, compared to what many people report in the US. Granted, you won't hit a hoard of them at one time, but I've found anywhere from 5-20 per box. I'd stay away from cent rolls, if possible. I've also found almost every nickel from 1964-present in boxes here in Canada, and a handful from earlier, but never any War Nickels. I've had to swap with some generous Us nickel searchers to get those for my collection. Nickels present a good prospect, but if you do enough nickel searching here in Canada, you will get most of the last 44 years anyway. Halves would certainly be a good thing to try, but you would want/need a place to get rid of the ones you don't want. You can't just filter them into circulation up here, like you can with cents, nickels, dimes and quarters. Just a thought. |

Think I missed something here. Is that person flying there? If so why burden them with excessive weight from a place that the coins have already been searched to death? As you may or should know, florida has a lot of coin shows which means a lot of coin collectors so whatever he would get there would probably be less usable than what you would find in your grocery store change.
Now if that person is driving there, that is a different story. If so I would ask him to get as much change from every small town he goes through, near by or a little out of the way.
Also, where you live is also another story. If your from a large city area the coins they will bring back are similar to what you could find at home.
If I were you I would not bother with coins from Florida.

Thanks for all your insight.. Jamez, He' going to Orlando. Topher.. I never thought of that, not being able to get rid of them after I've gone through them  carl.. No, I don't live in a big city, so if I find any Wheaties, or Jeffersons I get excited  |

I like the thought of asking someone who is going on a beautiful, relaxing vacation to haul back two boxes of halves for you to search through!  Based on the weight of halves, and the possibility of winding up with a whole bunch of 1971 and 1976 coins, I would go with nickels. You've got a much better chance of finding something worth while, imho. Don't forget that there is some new law that says you can't take over $XX pennies or nickels out of the U.S. I can't remember how much it is. |
