I'm toward the end of filling my wheat backs, and I'm considering starting on the memorial cents. There's no gray sheet on them because I'm assuming they're too cheap to really list. So how do you generally price these?

What is the general price range? I'm not talking about PCGS 67+, just nice raw MS reds. I'm assuming the price fluctuates between the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc?

The Memorials are actually harder to aquire than the wheats ,, but only because they are so inexpensive in the moderate grades ,, searching ebay for singles is useless ,,even if you find what your looking for 1.00 shipping will kill you on costs ,,

I collected mine by rolls and mint sets selected from them the best for my collection ,,and am sitting on the rest of the coins ,, at least when you buy rolls and mint sets a couple of bucks + the cost of the roll or set does not feel so bad .

If you choose Rolls to look through just look for original rolls OBW's for the 60's and rolls from Brinks or one of the other sub contractors for the rest and pick the best .

By the way ,,if you do go with rolls ,expect to buy a few rolls of the early 60's to find coins without spots on them ,, they are tough !

If you've never done it before, I'd highly recommend doing so roll hunting. Fill the spaces and then upgrade as you go along. You can find some really nice ones. Do this for a while and if some are still not up to par with the rest of the collection then consider buying or even ask around on the forum. I'll bet there are members here who have nicer memorials that they wouldn't mind parting with.

On geting bu 1959 thru 2008 coins. It easy just to buy an complete set on ebay for around 19.95 for an intire bu set with all 7 1982 vartites, and with 1960 small dates for books. Look for sets with 60 small dates and all 7 1982 coins.

On coin roll searching and went thru 40 boxs over last year. I am building 15 sets is why I did it. All my sets are complete minus 5 of them that need 1982 small dates. Its tough to find decent 1959 thru 1982 something coins . Most are spoted or faded out old coins. Its cheap and easy to buy an complete set on ebay becides trying go thru all those coin rolls or boxs for one set.

The other hard penny to buy is 1970 s small date. I was taken once on buying an large date on ebay once. I sent back and got my money back. He sent me an large date and not an small date penny was why. You need learn about the 1970 small date pennys before you buy one. There are sellers on ebay selling large date pennys as the expensive 50 or 60 dollar small date pennys. You get them and they all large dates it seems.

On rolls you need be careful buying rolls on ebay since last year I bought an 1988 d bank wraped roll. I get it and open it all pennys had black spots all over them. What an waste and after that I will not buy any old bank wraped rolls. I try to buy rolls in clear tubes after that.

Thats the route I took. I bought a set for 19.95 all BU from 59 up. Most were really nice and some were so so. On those I wanted to upgrade, I bought those separate, still in the mint packaging. I still have a few that I want to replace, but there a dime a dozen and I don't rush to buying one.

I did the opposite of you. I bought the Memorial's first and now to the wheats. I have 35 up done in BU, working on my 09-34's in xf/au. Good luck.

I pretty much filled my 59-present book by roll hunting myself. It is suprising how many red cents you can find dating back sometimes even earlier that 1959. I wound up with just a few that I needed to procure some other way (1972-S,73-S, 70 S small date).
It's nice only having to pay face for those, as the wheaties will cost a lot more to finish....

My opinion is purchasing an entire set is like buying a model plane kit already put together. Buying a sandwhich when you have all the incrediants at home. Paying someone to take your car to a gas station and fill with gas. I've seen these at many coin shows for even less than mentioned here. Naturally no 72 Double Die, 70S small date, 95 Double Die, etc. but all the rest and in an album too.
Just takes the fun of finding them yourself.
Also, my silly opinion is roll searching is one way to go but remember that all those coins went through a counting machine, a rolling machine, who knows what else. I suggest checking out banks for $50 Bags of cents and going through those. Amazing thing is many banks have a bag tucked away for a long, long time so if you ask for one, who knows what you'll find.

Got sidetracked. Back to USARMy guy's original question. The prices vary dramatically. Sure wish you were in an area where there are numerous coin shows. At one of our larger monthly ones there is a husband/wife team that purchases bags of cents constantly. Also, numerous 2x2's. They put all the MS grades in the 2x2's and sell them at this show. They have one of the busiest tables too. They sell each common date Lincoln Cent for $0.25 to $0.50 pending on the dates. Naturally none of the higher valued ones like a 70S small date. From 59 up nothing higher than $0.50 and all out of $50 bags of cents. AHHHH the fun of a coin show.

For most memorials you can't beat mint sets for quality and cost is minimal (or even negative) when you deduct the value of the other coins. There are some dates like the '79-D where you're better off looking at BU rolls. A lot of the later mint set cents (after '85) are just stunning Proof Likes. A few of these even have nice square rims and look like branch mint proofs.

Prepare to look at five or ten sets of most dates to find nice specimens. The '68-P always has carbon spots in the set.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
