Did you know that Congress is considering passing legislation to allow the melting of copper cents? At $3.50 per pound there are about 145 cents to a pound and from 1981 back they are 95% copper...Canadian are 97+% copper before 1997.That's $2+ for every pound of copper pennies! Saving Lincoln memorial cents(1958 to 1981)& Canadian cents(before 1997)will be worth your while,I think

If you are already going thru rolls of cents, like I am, it seems like a no brainer. I'm throwing all my coppers in a bucket, just in case.

But why would congress make it legal? What is the point? So the mint has to make more?

Zach, if they do discontinue the cent after 2009 (speculated) and it is not considered a circulated coin, they probably could not stop it. It would seem that it would not longer fall into the category called "defacing currency".

Naturally the melting down of any coins is depending on where you live, who you know, how many you have, etc. Around where I live the melting of coins is as common as the melting of wires BORROWED from construction sites. Metal acquisitions of all types, varieties, quantities and the smelting of such is so common around here that I didn't think anyone even considers it against the law. This law is observed as much as the one against spitting on the street.

From a purely financial standpoint, most wheat cents are worth more than the melt value (currently about $.024/coin). You would be better off selling them on ebay. And on top of that, the prospect of them being melted should raise their value.
