I'm a notice ornithologist, I've birded everywhere I've traveled to in the last 11 years. So I thought what a great collection for me, coins with birds on them. It hasn't been growing for very long far, with only 24 circulated coins, not much considering how many bird coins there are.

I'm interested in seeing what's out there. I'll start with a Australian 1980 50 cent, featuring a Emu on Australia's coat of arms, it's not the best pic though.

Cheers

Edit: add your bird if u know what it is

Neat idea and super fun theme... *two thumbs up*!

Immediately I thought of all the canadian coins with birds on 'em.... of course you're probably very aware to those... now I just think about my world collections...

Going to have to have a peak at those to see if there's something cool to show off on this thread!

I purchased a 1963 New Zealand ONE PENNY with a bird on the reverse...I only purchased it, because I got it in my head that I needed as many MS coins from my birth date...I think I bit off more than I can chew...I only want MS Coins...

I also wanted it, because I had no idea that any western country had made such large cents by that date.

Oh, yea, it's also beautiful!

Irish pre-decimal coins, issued between 1928 and 1970, featured a woodcock on the farthing and a hen and chicks on the penny:

Irish decimal coins, issued between 1971 and 2001, have stylized birds on the halfpenny, penny, and two pence coins:

There are LOTS of coins with birds. Numista lists 1901 coins with eagles, 81 with doves, 41 with roosters, etc.

Glenmore, the Eagle is definitely common on coins, I think it's due in part because many countries through history have used it in their coat of arms. German & Austria coins come to mind with many having a eagle.

In the situation where a country has used the same bird on multiple denominations, I've decided that for now I'm gonna keep just one coin not one from each denomination. I'm trying to stay away from mythical & stylized birds as well,

It's rather telling that so many countries have chosen a bird of prey as their symbol.

One bird coin -- or series -- you might want to check out is the French reimagining of the Gallic rooster, issued over the last three years in 10, 100, and 250 euro denominations. Each year a little more of the design is revealed.
