JFH - Your note is certainly worth sending to TPG. You paid AU money, but who knows?

JFH and Frog, you both have great $10 Gold Certs, congrats!

Thanks - one of my favorite notes. This $10 note (first issued in 1907), along with the $1,000 of 1907 and the 1905/06 $20 gold certificates, were the first "modern" note designs with a central portrait on the front that eventually evolved into our standardized small size currency in 1928.

Interesting side note Frog. I never knew that.

So I'd like to solicit opinions on having my Hawaii $1 graded (top of page 3 of this thread). I will post some larger photos if it would help.

This "modern" look did not appear on Silver Certificates and US Notes until 1923, and then only on a handful of denominations such as the well-known "Pokerchip" and "Porthole" notes, and of course the most common large note of all (by a factor of 10), the $1 SC - which is strikingly similar to its small size replacement of a few years later.

CK - Tough call. Centering looks good enough for 65, but it is impossible to assess (from these pics) even the faintest handling marks, which could hold it to a 58. This is a very common note in TPG 65 PQ and tends to sell not far from $200 as such on ebay when it comes up regularly. I have a couple of nice raw ones myself and am frankly not sure what to do either.

Thanks for the thoughts, Coinfrog. I will attempt some better photos tonight and see if that will help. If not I'm not sure I'll bother sending in and eventually buy one that's already graded, since for the price I paid for the note plus grading fees and associated costs, it would be approaching $200 anyway.

Makes sense. I don't think further pics would shed any light on possible faint handling marks - only you can sense these in hand with a good backlight.
The $1 Hawaii is a popular one-year type note, which props up the value. But there were more of them printed than the NA yellow-seal and they must have survived the war, unused, in great quantities.

Quote: But there were more of them printed than the NA yellow-seal... And, to bring this thread back around to the original intent, when I pick up a nice NA $1 note, it's likely to be my new favorite for a while.

hajduk - most impressive array of NBNs. The scope of your collection is remarkable, much greater than I imagined.

My new favorite, despite the damage. These are nearly impossible to find, especially in low grade.
