I am planning on doing a persuasive research paper on whether or not the Cent should be retired, but I'm not sure if there's enough information on the subject to compose a 4-6 page paper on it. Would there perhaps be more information on phasing out the dollar bill and switching over to the use of a dollar coin?

Hi Tim
Im sure that a work such as you are thinking of doing could be compiled in a pro-con question ,although it would be very difficult to come to a conclusion or a finding based on the work ,since I have not seen any majority on either side of either question .
there are quite a few articles already written in several of the periodicals and a person to person census could give you plenty of information for the essay .

I think there is plenty of information pro or con about the cent and similar for the dollar. Most of the information is readily available on the internet. However, I do stress to you the importance of not "copy/pasting" the information and to properly cite any web sources you use in the article. Best of luck!

Yeah, we had to watch an anti-plagiarism video at the beginning of class today. Also, in addition to researching the topic (I'm going to do the 'retiring the cent' one), might it be possible to interview a few of you? I need expert advice, and I know nobody who knows more about coins than you guys do. Anyone interested in helping me out?

In my opinion you could write a complete novel about that subject due to all the hipe about it lately. Just some of the topics you could write about would be the present cost of producing a cent, a few years ago cost of producing the cent. How much could be saved by our government by not producing the cent. Then here is touching subject. Where would all the excess money go from our government if they saved millions by not producing the cent. You could go into examples of similar coinage produced in other countries such as the Canadian Cent. Discuss one of the biggest complaints about vending machines not taking steel cents. Bring up how few vending machines actually use a cent anyway. Discuss many different materials that a cent could be made from and the advantages and disadvantages of each. The usage of Stainless steels and the massive varieties of each type. You could even discuss the reasons to change the cent from Lincoln to maybe Elvis. Actually you could have a section or paragraph or two on who or what should now be on the cent after the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Cent. You could discribe the many different cents produced over time and how usefull they USED to be. Primarily you could also mention the possible necessity to drop our cents and most other monitary coinage and go with a more Universal Coin such as the Europe is attempting. My point is there are numerous things to write about when it comes to the elemination of the cent. Pros and cons.

4-6 pages should be easy (I don't mean to trivialize your report though). There have been a ton of articles within the past 6 months in Coin World and Numismatic News.

Thanks so much for your input, everyone. I agree with Prethen, this paper is starting to sound pretty easy with all of the things just_carl mentioned in mind. About the Coin World and Numismatic News magazines, is it possible for me to obtain those articles online, or would I need to find a hard copy of the magazines?

I think, when you begin researching for your paper, you will discover that you will be hard pressed to keep it to 4 or 6 pages.

I agree with ralph there is volumes of info on this topic, I would begin by researching the various bills proposed by Congress and the angles lawmakers are taking.

In my opinion any paper on this subject should also discuss the political ramifications surrounding Lincoln, the 15th Amendment and the positions taken by political and moral leaders in the Afro-American community. Just my opinion... afernbaugh

Those articles are perfect. Thank you, biokemist6. I'm about to get started on my project now, I want to try and finish it tonight.
afernbaugh, could you clarify how that relates to retiring the penny? If I could understand what you mean by that a little better I'd be more than happy to use it in my paper. Thanks.

I would expect that the Afro-American leaders in Congress and elsewhere would put up a strong resistance to stop producing the Lincoln Cent for any reason. Lincoln is one of the primary icons of the freedom movement and will be for ever. The decision to stop producing the Lincoln Cent will be emotional and will not be made because of any examinations of cost to produce the coin. afernbaugh

afernbaugh, If the cent was discontinued Lincoln would still be on the $5 bill.

I would think that there's more information about eliminating the cent than eliminating the dollar. This might be of some help and it has the video that 60 minutes did on this back in February. http://60minutes.yahoo.com/segment/141/penniesGood luck!
