1st year 1859. You can also tell by the reverse.

The reverse is scratched and the coin has environmental damage.

Ok. I thought they might be planchet adjustment marks. Lesson learned: Don't buy uncertified dark colored copper coins if the room in which I am viewing the coins has little lighting.

The scratches look like they came after the ED. I would grade the coin AG Details.

There should be no adjustment marks on Indian Head cents. The practice was done mainly on gold and silver pre 1807.

The type of damage to leave alone, even at a cheap price.

The pits are corrosion that was cleaned away, leaving those depressions.

The X on the reverse was intentional, rather than accidental, so it is referred to as graffiti.

Either of these would cause the coin to be given a details grade, rather that a righteous numerical grade.

You have several issues, damage, pitting, scratches, just not a pleasant coin. More of a hole filler, but this coin has a high mintage and you can find nice examples with relative ease.

Surf around ebay for a better piece. I've found several that I've picked up under $5 that were amazing deals, little to no problems, F-VF+
