Just watched the mint announcement of the 2017 Liberty Gold Coin. For all of the hoopla, they didn't give us a very good look at the coin itself. They say it is a cameo proof with edge lettering but you can't really see that in the video.

Coinweek has an article about it as well, but their graphic looks like a rendering. http://www.coinweek.com/us-coins/un...coin-design/

Is that design limited to the $100 gold?

I watched the video as well and was surprised that they didn't have images of the actual coin to show at their official "unveiling."

It was mentioned that an actual coin would be available for viewing at the reception that followed the presentation, so they did have at least one available that could have been imaged.

Oh, well. It's likely that actual images will be available soon. I'm patient.

It will also be used for a silver medal.

The mint says that there will be a set of silver medals (probably similar to the 2015 & 2016 offerings) as well. They also say the this will be a biennial offering with different versions of Liberty each time. The coin is set to release on April 6th.

I just viewed the West Point video of this coin on the U.S. Mints Facebook page and most of the comments are negative, and some that really are uncalled for..

Wouldn't be surprised if they take down the thread..

The production video posted on the Mint's Facebook page has several good views of the actual coin. Worth a look!

Definitely a nicer looking coin than the B&W sketches suggested (IMO). The coin's edge lettering appears to be the same style as used for the 30th anniversary silver eagles.

If it is a 50K or less limited mintage it MIGHT sell out.

If it is low relief design and an unlimited mintage it will sell for spot in the near future once the fancy TPG labels and ebay speculators fall off.

The cartoon stars make the obverse look like a 14 year old girl that got punched in the head. I'm not a fan of the eagle with the downward wings.

That is a strange coin imho. The star head band is odd and the eagle is a bit ugly... If the idea is to expand the image of liberty to be more inclusive at least the coin should be pleasing to the eye.

I am with jbuck, I don't have the cash for the gold coin, plus I've heard that the mintage will be 100,000. If this is true, seems way above amount of people who can afford to buy it. The silver medal will look nice next to my 2016s, and will probably have a much higher mintage.

I predict that this will be a DISASTER for the mint and they have it coming to them.
I am not taking a stance on the matter, but the mere fact that so many people (on facebook and elsewhere) are hating on this coin should have been a financial deterrent from producing it. While it may symbolize some great concept, the bottom line is that the mint should make coins that the most people will want.
This is definitely not that.
Add to that a mintage of 100K & the cost per item there is no upside here. No sellout and no secondary market to attract speculators.
