Hey everybody - new coin roll hunter here...
I've been going through rolls of dimes/nickels/pennies for the last few weeks and today I had what I thought was my FIRST SILVER! Now I'm unsure, what's the story on '42 nickels with no mint mark? Did I miss my first silver by a matter of months?

Normal Philadelphia mint. First part of year were standard nickel, mid year changed to silver mix w/mm on reverse.
BTW to the family!

Yes, "missed it by...that much", Maxwell Smart!

Only P & S mints in 42, all three mints 43-45, that's why it takes 11 not 12 for a set!

The silver ones have the mint mark above the building. Looks like a possible lamination.

A close-up of the line that starts at the G in GOD and goes to the collar, well, then John1 can tell you for sure.

Anyway, looks like you have an error coin to me.

Not an expert -- so wait for confirmation.

Thanks for the info - turns out there were 49 million no mint (Philly) nickels and 57 million P (silver) nickels produced in 1942 so it's almost MOAR rare ftw

Great find, even if it isn't silver! It is still 75 years old as moxking has said.

Yep... by just a few... but still a nice coin. I would keep it.

I'm on board the lamination train too. I'm pretty sure of it, but a close up of the "cracked" area on the obverse would let use be able to tell for sure.

It looks like a lamination error on the obverse to me and I might rather have that than a regular worn War Nickel.

I've found one War Nickel but no Lams in my limited roll hunting.

Nice find!

Well, silver War Nickels are worth only like 70 cents anyway.

to the CCF ... just to clarify one bit of information you have been given:

Quote:
Only P & S mints in 42, all three mints 43-45

There were 13.9 million Denver mint 1942 nickels as well ... all of which are the pre-war composition of 75% copper / 25% nickel .... same as your Philadelphia mint example.
