Do you think there is an interest in half-dollars in the general public?

My bank will not release them for circulation because it's president believes that no-one likes them. Yet, most of the time that I use them to purchase something, it sparks a conversation.

Today I ran across a bank that would only let me have them on condition that I bring back those not needed. The lady said that the cost of shipping them in was high, and that she needed them because her town liked them.

What are your thoughts?

I have been in retail for a decade. ANY coins other then the norm are a Pain! Same as the $2 note. I'll have Always bought them out of the drawer just to forgo the trouble of counting them separately for the deposit.

But they sure are fun to spend

numismatists don't count as "public"

we are always the exception of the rule of thumb that governs the vast majority of the conglomerate of souls in the US

I can see it being a pain for the retailer. Probably considered a novelty by the people on the street. Some folks stare at them as though they have never seen one.

but NOTHING is as fun as spending an Ike at McDonalds with a teenager at the helm. Poor kids have to call their manager over....who is only a few years older anyways.

Good times

It sure is! Have to practice. Say " I am a numismatist " ten times, but not too fast. lol Well, maybe it would work better if you held your favorite coin in your hand while saying it.

I suspect that when you pay with halves, they are pocketed or returned to the bank. Either way, they leave circulation again. At least the banker does not have to see me bringing them all in again.

Nope, not at all and they hate change(as seen with the Ike, SBA,Sac, and Presidential dollars).

In my experience, it doesn't seem like they do. Generally when I go to a register to spend them the cashier always has to ask "Is this a dollar or a half dollar?" The cashiers that I go to frequently sometimes look really put out when I come their way and when I have tried to spend $10 in halves in paper rolls they always try to break them open and give them back to me. If I wanted to keep them I could have taken them out of the roll myself. I have to ask them for paper bills.

People in my area rarely comment anymore I guess they are used to me handing them out as tips and for small purchases. I'm with GO however on the fast food places. This has been the source of my most fun. Even spent a few Ikes there to see what the reaction would be.

I worked for a while as a cashier in a supermarket and I was able to swap $2 bills and half dollars, and occasionally dollar coins into my drawer on a regular basis. I would then give them out as normal change. It is from my experience that men either loved receiving these or did not notice or did not care. Young women looked a bit perplexed but took them. Old women always seemed to remark with something like "Ohh I remember these." Middle-aged women tended to be the *itchiest and were most likely to demand "regular" money.

So I would say that most of the public doesn't care either way, or likes them.

Have you ever noticed how the cashiers must use the register readout for making change. The halves just complicate it and slow the process down. Management doesn't want them accepting bogus currency and so few have seen them in circulation. Besides, I have to pull my belt tighter to lug around $5 worth of halves and it is uncomfortable. nlp

The public don't use halves that much. So generally speaking I will say they don't like them. However collectors do.
