If you are looking for pre-1950 cents in circulating rolls, you are looking in the wrong place. Find rates for wheaties in circulated rolls is less than 0.5% so if you want them, you should buy wheatie rolls.

I went through $100 in pennies a few months ago and found maybe 25 wheats, all were 40s and 50s, except found 1 1907 Indian cent in VG. Several 1940, several steel, etc. So if you just buy a few $25 boxes of pennies, I think you can slowly fill in many of the 40s and 50s directly from circulation. It also depends where you are. On West Coast, I think you'll have an easier time finding the S mint 40s and 50s. I heard that in some parts of the country, pre-1982 coins are being hoarded for their copper content, which would mean loss of wheats from circulation.

Keep looking!

Found one this weekend... a 1944. But in they seem to be very few and very far between. I agree with biokemist6, pick up some bulk wheaties if you're looking to fill in some dates with circulation coins.

In my 10 years of going through pocket change I have found one pre-1950 Wheat cent. It wasn't a common one either, it was a 1942 D.

It looks like from my records that I find about 3 pre-1950 cents per box on average. The oldest being a 1914. I defiantly think you can fill a good portion of your album with coins found in coin rolls. I'm only missing 4 dates from the early 30's to have a Wheat penny from every year.

ha ha, I just though about what I posted and thought I should clarify, I am only missing 4 dates from the early 30's out of the wheat cents from 1930 to 1958.

I received a 1937 in change just the other day as I was headed out on a half dollar run. Great start of a good day. Don't give up.
