As Trade dollars were not legal tender, stateside, they were often repurposed. This one caught my eye, given the inserted photo and engraving, as it better speaks to the real purpose of these so-called "opium dollars." They're true remembrances of the romantic Victorian era, late 1800's. In addition to being repurposed by jewelers, I suspect that many Trade dollars were melted by them, too, as a source of silver.
