Help Identifying Persian (Iranian) Coin

Lucky Cuss Pillar of the Community United States 4883 Posts	Posted 03/01/2018 6:50 pm This shouldn't be so hard as it's proving for me. Plucked today out of the "junk" solver bin, dated 1315. I take it to be from the Qajar dynasty (specifically the reign of Muzaffar al-Din Shah), so the date would in that case convert to 1898. I was thinking it was a ¼ Qiran (Kran) but at 15.3 mm in diameter with a weight of 1.24 grams, it's just slightly larger and heavier than one of those ought to be. Looking at different coins from both dynasties, it seems like there was a change in the calendar, so I understand your confusion. During the Qajar dynasty, 1315 in the Islamic calendar was around 1898 in the Gregorian calendar; however, during the Pahlavi dynasty, 1315 in the Persian calendar was around 1936 in the Gregorian calendar. The 1/4 rial coin from the latter dynasty seems to match the dimensions of your coin pretty well, as does its overall appearance.
