I just got into collecting coins and its not so cheap for a teenager with a part time job.

I have a hard time paying 30-40 dollars for a good 2 cent coin. and how ever much a proof set is just for 91 cents or so.

but the worst part for me is how people react wen I say I spent 30 dollars for 2 cents or something. It's so annoying.

what are some of the things u guys use to justify your purchases?

The one I use on my friends that smoke is - "You spend 5 dollars a day on a pack of cigarettes that you get absolutely nothing to show for except bad lungs. So thats 35 dollars a week. I would rather take that 35 dollars and buy something I will have for the rest of my life."

Who says we have to rationalize anything

Sadly we are a humble people and anyone outside of the world of numismatics will never understand.

I do spend that much occasionally on some coins but normally I'd rather spend $100 on 100 coins instead of 1 coin

I know what you mean. My dad thinks that all of my time and money should go to dirtbiking. I do love doing it but I have other interests as well. I just say that I wanted it and that's all. Rationalizing with people that aren't open to other points of views is a waste of time. They will disagree no matter what.

Welcome!.

I only have to justify my purchases to myself, and I'm easy.

For everyone else...its an investment in my future. How can they argue with saving money.

...and I think that those 5 dollars a day bought your friend something he'll have the rest of his life too...unfortunately.

Yea I just bought a 2 cent coin and didn't even tell my dad because I didn't want him to know I spent 15 dollars on it which was a really good deal BTW.

i also have a friend who is very strict with money and goes crazy when I tell him the price of coins. So I collect coins and I don't even tell any1 about my purchases.

Except you guys of course, because you guys understand

I think your folks would be glad to hear that your hard earned money is going to purchase rare and exotic coins rather than booze or drugs or 27 other things not as good. I don't think there would be a problem sharing your purchase with them.

Something that's amazed me over the years is how little tolerance even collectors have for other collectors. To a stamp collector, baseball cards go in bicycle spokes; to a coin collector, stamps are for mailing stuff; card collectors figure coins are for spending, etc.

Not only are all these people focused to the point of being crazy, but I'm depending on them for a living!

Sean1011, sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders. Keep collecting. This hobby is incredibly rewarding in both the financial aspect as well as personal satisfaction. Your parents should be proud of you.
