Ive never seen gold toned Kennedy half dollars but found these in the search last night. Is this toning unusual?

Plated for sure, a common gimmick for retail coin hustlers. Junk.

Not so sure it is plated. I picked one out of circulation back in the early 70s with the same look.

Ok everyone, lets play nice and not call anyone names. Granted these coins are usually plated and sold to unsuspecting individuals.

hello ccobb,
I have seen a few plated coins that look like your coin but none 1964. All the ones I have seen were usually 1971 and newer. When I weighed the golden looking half dollars that I came across, they all weighed like a regular clad half dollar.
What is the weight of your 1964 half? Maybe this will shed some light.
I even took a file to the rim and remember I had a hard time trying to expose the inside.

@levelsofmadness thank you for your input! The coins weigh 12.4g ,I don't have a plated half dollar to compare them to and don't know what a pated one would weigh. What I do know is that the coins don't look like other gold plated coins as you can see in the photo. Also, these coins have been in my safe for close to fifty years! That means within the first five years of their life they would have to have been plated by a crook, bought by a stupid wealthy person, maybe acid washed and then again harshly cleaned and carried in the pocket non stop to produce the color seen today. But what do I know? Nothing, LOL I guess anything is possible. Once again, thank you for your kind response! I'm just trying to learn.

@ccob I wasn't inferring you. I should have been more clear. In my community there are people who think that plated coins are a "get rich quick" thing and dumped a lot of $ into it. When they find out they are worth nada they dump them back. I wasn't calling you stupid, I was calling them.

A 1964 Kennedy half dollar is supposed to weigh 12.5 gm, so your weight is good. The later ones weigh at least a gram less. (I have a postal scale, which is accurate within a gram, so your scale must be pretty nice.)

How uniform is the color? How shiny? It seems uniform from the photos, and even the edges seem to be the same color, but I can't tell for certain.
