I have just been going through some bags of 50cents that I have lying around, and thought I would post this find. Closer investigation of what I thought was a scratch at the base of the roo's foot revealed a nice surprise. A lot of metal flow (not sure of the correct terminology), around the roo's legs, shield, and the 50 legend. Very messy, and a very rewarding find.

Fairly common on quite a few years due to the RAM continuing to use worn out dies (or so I believe).

I have it occurring on the following years.

1998 B&f
1999
2000 Mill.Yr
2001 CoF
2004
2007
2008
2011

agree Die deterioration from I think 2004 onward I feel the RAM just reworked reverse dies. Sadly not that valuable :(, though I collect them :). I think we should start calling them the Sloppy 50 cents, I wonder if the RAM will then start to pick up on this.

Noodled This week, from 2006....

If you look closely under the roos butt, and between the emu's legs, there are what I believe to be Die Polishing Lines. However, the coin "texture" is quite pimply. Could it be a re-worked die that "failed"?, very early in it's working life?

It's very obvious on that one.
I don't think rework of dies happens any more - probably just die fill coupled with over-use.
