It's mainly dumb because they're worth far more as coins than as a blob of impure silver. If you melt silver coins you're throwing money away and destroying history at the same time.

I have to agree. The main reason why I hoard 95% copper cents is to save them from being melted. I doubt I will ever directly profit from them.

OP you have truly remarkable eyesight. I would never be able to note the tiny date on a 5 cent silver as it's tumbling into the melting pot.
