My friend bought several junk canadian silver lots on ebay. I went to his house the day it arrived to helpn him melt it down. It was coins word silver spot in P-G condition he got a handful and saw that it was, silver and bad condition ones. Just to check for fakes he tested it with his metal detector, it only rung silver and copper alloy. So he prepared his crucible and when it got to 1500 celsius he poured it in and when he was close to emptying the bucket we saw a 1921 5 cent probably G-F condition fall in. Only to be melted down. And so on the silver bar he stamped the words "1 LB 999 Silver - Includes The Melted Down Remains Of A 1921 Nickel"

Your friend must be some sort of alchemist.
How does he get 999 silver from 80% silver in his home?
Skims the slag and says hocus-pocus?
And why does he have nickel in the mix?
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Why did he continue to melt it down when he saw that it was a 1921?

Because he only noticed as it was falling. It received too much damage to recover before he could do anything.

5 cent coins are traditionally called nickels even if they aren't actually made of nickel.
I guess by US standards it was technically a Half Dime, but there is no such term in Canadian numismatics (because their 5 cent coins never had the " Half Dime" lettering).

...For what it's worth, I prefer to believe that the date was something else and you just misread. It's probably more likely than an actual 1921 ending up in there.

Still sad one way or another.

was the '21 lost before or after you captured a yeti, only to have him escape by being beamed aboard a space ship (piloted by a unicorn of course) ?!?!

Oh my gosh oh my! Guess you missed the 1921 after going through them all and checking them with the metal detector! What a story!

From my perspective, it pains me that coins are being melted at ALL. But for the love of everything, if you are going to do it, at least check all of the coins first.

Just because it contained silver - does not mean it was legit. Lots of fake 1921 5-cent coins out there made in China, you can even order them in silver (Mike Marshall had a few examples of key dates struck in silver - however the markers are still there).

You're probably right, either we miss saw or it was a silver fake. Thanks for the info.

It's still fully illegal to do so, yet people admit to doing it all the time.

Don't know about Canada but it's not illegal here.

Mark me as doubtful as well .
Sort of like the time in 1962 when I spent the 1921 Canada 50 cents in the Liquor store
Only realized it in my drunken stupour ! Oh , I was 8 at the time.
