I hope they don't spend it. There's not much you can buy for 12 cents these days...

Just got back from a so-called "Trunk or Treat" in which I offered the age-appropriate kids two choices: a piece of chocolate or a ziplock bag with a 19050's cent, bicentennial quarter, bicentennial half dollar, and wooden nickel, *plus* an equivalent piece of chocolate. I'd estimate about two thirds of the kids picked the bag, while the other third just took the candy alone. in my mind, the key was to not make them pick between candy and no candy.

The lack of collector interest in the young is not due to a lack of exposure, but due to a real lack of interest.

They can't develop interest without exposure though, and where are they going to get exposure to old/obsolete designs and/or foreign coins?

I would have loved this when I was a kid. I think the parents will tell the kids to save the coins. Just maybe, the parents will show the kids why the coins are special.

OP here - I am getting terrible feedback on this from folks I run it by :( As if I'm handing out a set of old silverware, or collector Coke bottles or something. Me personally, I would have loved this, much better than another stupid candy bar. But maybe .. "kids these days"... Think I will at least attach a sugar cube, so they don't "trick" me to the tune of a horse head in my bed or something.

I still think it's a great idea . I bet the folks your running this by are all adults who were never interested in coins or collecting . Let the kids have a chance to see for themselves if it interests them or not .

Not running it down, I think it is a great idea, we have done it ourselves, but I do think you should also give them candy as well as the coins, not instead of or as a choice.

I still remember the old lady growing up who used to put pennies (not old ones) in our pillowcases when trick or treating.... wasn't appreciated by the neighborhood kids in the '80's. I think it would be different with a baggie of old coins vs her dropping 2-3 pennies in our sacks. I think this is a good idea and I have a 5 and 7 year old that I think would be thrilled to get one out trick or treating

We're planning, in addition to candy, giving a slick buff or Mardi Gras token to the ghouls.
