This 1837 Feuchtwanger cent has lain in my collection for 32 years. For some reason I never bothered to investigate the variety. I guess I thought there was no such thing as Feuchtwanger cent varieties...my ignorance.

Yesterday, somebody posted a Feuchtwanger Cent in one of the FB groups describing it is a scarce vatiety. Out of curiosity, I decided to investigate the example in my collection and try to attribute it. I learnt that there are 6 obverse dies which were paired with 9 reverse dies, yielding a total of 14 dies pairings or varieties.

My example combines obverse 3 with reverse D. Obverse 3 is characterized by the 3rd feather (from the right) set clearly off the ground. Reverse die D is characterized by the 'O' in ONE CENT set clearly below the 'N'.

Die pairing 3-D has a rarity rating of 7. Very rare. I am guessing the Sheldon scale is used. I only found two references for this variety on the internet.

Make sure you check your varieties carefully!

Nice find. Looks like it needs a bit of conservation though?

@mikev50, those are some really nice examples. Have you attributed them? I I

I found this site to be very interesting with both the history of this coinage and how to attribute them:

@westcoin, thank you! I am thrilled that I decided to try to find out more about the example in my collection (after 32 years).
It turns out it is a R-7 with less than 12 known.

There are a bunch of them for sale on eBay right now. I wonder how many of them are fakes?

GERMANICVS - Thanks for sharing the photos of another beautiful coin. I've never heard of a Feuchtwanger cent.

I always say that I hope to learn something new each day and you've helped me today.

Yes they are 13 berry varieties, but there are four different 13 berry varieties. Your first one is a 6-I R-1, and the other is 6-G R-3.

I have researched a little further for documented auction appearances of the Feuchtwanger 1837 Cent, 3-D variety.

This is what I have found. (there is actually one more which appeared as part of a collection of Feuchtwanger 1C's).

I cannot say that I am not happy !
