This morning I was handed a 2013-S Perry's Victory Monument quarter dollar in change at Burger King. Anyone else finding not-for-circulation coins? I'm assuming this coin came from those put into circulation by collectors a few years ago.

they turn up from time to time roll hunting quarters, I found two clad S proofs and 3 S circulation strikes last year while hunting for W mintmark quarters (a lot of hunting), it's pretty rare to get an S in change though. So congratulations!

Yes, not a common occurrence. In many, many years of roll searching, I believe I've come across 10-12 'not-for-circulation' (NFC) coins--not counting three NFC halves from bank teller trays.

I've also found LOTS of NIFC halves and only a single quarter in many years of roll hunting.

It blows my mind that someone would go to the trouble and expense of paying a premium for these NFC Kennedy halves (and S mint) and then put them into circulation. Is the consensus that this is being done on purpose by collectors? Or is this the result of stolen/pilfered collections?

Is the consensus that this is being done on purpose by collectors? Well say you buy a couple $25 bags of quarters, search them and there is nothing special or worth submitting there. What are you going to do with 200 S mint quarters? Or common 20 whatever P or D mint halves or 250 NA dollars? Maybe you take them to your local clubs and sell a dozen for a few buck each and get your premium back. So now you have maybe 80 coins that you just have face value in. Take forever to sell them, and the return probably wouldn't be worth the bother. So they get dumped at the bank.

*As an aside: Perry's Victory/Peace Monument has a special place in my life. It's located on the Bass Islands (Put-in-Bay) Ohio and I lived on that tiny island until I was 5 years old, literally played in the monument's shadow. It commemorates peace between the US and Canada.

Yep.... last year going thru .25 boxes looking for W's, I found 4 clad S proofs. 2001 NY, 2003 Arkansas, 2004 Michigan & 2006 Colorado. Sometimes people will use whatever they have, even proofs, to pay for items. Many years ago at the grocery store, I saw a kid spending Proof half dollars to buy candy, haha.... & yes, I bought them from the clerk.

My guess is they were taken in home burglaries and spent by the perpetrators...
