Wow scary. They are faking slabs, they are getting fakes thru the top TPGs into real slabs, they are counterfeiting $3 Buffalo nickels. This really feels like a death knell for the hobby. Anyone want to help put my mind at ease?

They have been making fake slabs since 2007.

For about 2 or 3 years now. Tere haven't ben a lot of them, but as time passes I'm afraid it's just doing to get worse.

Worse than that, you can actually buy fake 1956 and 1958 wheat cents. Coins that would retail for 5 to 20 cents.

I know that doesn't put your mind at ease, but it is the reality we have to deal with today. This spring a dealer showed me a complete set of Seated Liberty dollars, circulated (no 70 S) in a Dansco album. Every coin in the set was fake, and so was the album. There are marketers online that will sell sets like this. Full sets of large cents, Half Cents, Seated dollars, Morgan dollars and probably several other series.

Complete sets of counterfeit Buffs are readily available, both in counterfeit Whitman folders and (apparently) also in counterfeit Dansco albums.

What is odd is that many of the counterfeit Buffs purport to be VF-EF common date coins. Some of them are almost comically bad counterfeits (the 1918-D/1917-D is a prime example), but several in the series are deceptively close. Fortunately, there are clear markers for most of the counterfeits.

I started seeing these sets pop up in shows in the fake Whitman folders about 3-4 years ago. They are readily available individually and as sets on the usual websites.
