1998 D Washington Quarter Possible Error?

laciedanee New Member United States 1 Posts	Posted 07/06/2020 4:38 pm Hi, I'm very new to coin collecting, so I have had coins with errors go right passed me and some that seem to be something turn into nothing. This one in particular I can't find anything on so I'm not sure if I have a great find or just another coin. On the word "in" the I seems to merge or slant into the N making it look like a W. Instead of In God We Trust, it looks as if it says W God We Trust. And maybe there's an error I don't see. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Report this Post to the Staff

ijn1944 Bedrock of the Community United States 19329 Posts	Posted 07/06/2020 4:45 pm The I in IN appears to have been 'hit', with the metal forming the I rotating slightly counterclockwise. Looking closely one can see the path the hit I took. Coins are made of relatively soft metal. Hits on soft metal details can appear to move the details into other positions. coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 07/06/2020 4:52 pm Note the affected area. Note how it is parallel to the edge? This cause cause by something mechanical, like a quarter Gumball Machine. So the coin was damaged after it was in use. Just a face value coin. Report this Post to the Staff
