I have a handful of pennies but this particular coin has a protruding line running vertically across. Is this a common error?

Agree--linear plating bubble. Could be a 2x2 keeper (as a representative example).

If the holder of your coin has felt or soft material to cushion the coin, it is useful. If it does not, they could scratch the coin.

please be careful using tweezers... metal-on-metal contact is not recommended, as it's easy to damage the coin surface. Consider cotton gloves (sold at any coin shop or any hobby shop) for holding your coins. Perhaps some of these aren't valuable, but some could be!
