This Trade dollar was rejected by PCGS in January 2004 as "cleaned." Although the pictures don't show it, the coin has semi PL surfaces. The coin has a dark appearance to it and I see no hairlines in the fields. Would anyone recommend a method of retaining a more original color to it?

I agree with PCGS. It has been cleaned.

I don't see this one as obviously cleaned. PCGS no longer "rejects" cleaned coins, they assign a details grade plus a "cleaned" statement on the label.
If resubmitted now I wouldn't be surprised at a straight AU-50 grade.
I don't think you can do anything to improve the color. Possibly the NGC conservation service could help.

If it's cleaned, it is done well.

The big tell for me is the non uniformity of the color. The high points, especially on the reverse, are starkly brighter than the fields and outer devices. That type of contrast can occur, but not usually in that fashion or degree. Also, if it were natural, I'd expect to see it on the obverse as well, but as you can see, that is not the case.

All that said, even though I think the coin was cleaned, I think the coin is market acceptable, and would probably straight grade. Even though the coin was cleaned, it's not to a degree it ruins it

Can't argue, the eagle looks a bit highlighted, but that sounds like a pretty tight call for PCGS. I'd crack it or send for re-grade.

Grapes nails it, the eagle and most high points were cleaned, the coin wasn't dipped, but the highest points of the coins were cleaned..

Try acetone to help remove blotches and then taco belling it.

Thanks to all that replied. The strike is good, and yes there is obvious wear on Liberty's left breast and less obvious on her left knee and hand. Usually one sees hairlines with a cleaning, but I am not seeing it. Would anyone recommend dipping it or would you leave it as is?

Thanks for your insight, grape! I see it now! I think I'll just put the coin back into the 2X2.

Perhaps no hairlines in the fields, but there are a few much deeper nicks. Mature patinas tend to hide hairlines, or perhaps they have been carefully cleaned off.
Cleaning almost always removes radial luster as well, but a strong patina can heavily mask original luster.
Either way, I can appreciate why PCGS suggests 'cleaned'.

If it was my coin, I would definitely not try to interfere with it any further, it is a rather nice coin as it is. I would be perfectly happy to include it in my collection.
In terms of eye appeal, some may consider the contrast wear on the high point of Liberty's left breast to be somewhat of a distraction.

Disagree with cleaned, looks like an AU that would straight grade
