Hi all,

I purchased this Morgan from a bullion dealer as uncirc. As I was looking at it I noticed the strange "shadowing" sort of look to the coins finish on the rim side of the stars and date on the obverse.

What causes this sort of strange look and what is this called?

What does this coin grade?

Also the third star right of the date has a shiny spot in the pic this appears to be a gouge/defect on that point of this star through my loupe. In the pic some reflection has blurred this so its hard to tell.

Thanks!

Is it me, or are the letters in "In God We Trust" angled all over the place?

Looking at the coin I think the picture is accurate in terms of the "In God We Trust" motto. You really only see this in magnification it looks straight and true to the naked eye.

Yes, I thought it might be just the magnification and light refraction.

I'd say a solid MS-63. The shadowing on the outside of the stars is called pull away toning, and it's usually associated with natural toning.

Thanks for the knowledge. Using proper terms is obviously very important in Numismatics and I had no way to identify the term for this effect. Much appreciated!
