I wanted to start buying silver bars but found out buying from a precious metal distributor is not the way to go for me . I'm better off buying from my local coin shows that they have every other week . No shipping charges and no sales tax . Yesterday I saw some generic bars on APMEX , my plan was to buy one bar a month . The price was $28.98 each , Affordable , I was ready to pull the trigger until I saw the bottom figure $ 43.50 . Are they kidding me ? $9.00 for shipping and $3.50 for tax . That's not the way for me to invest . Proud Member of The Black Sheep Squadron ! In Memory of Fallen Black Sheep Mates .

That's one of the reasons silver is a poor investment. Also, price is less than it was ten years ago, as a hedge it's not even keeping up with inflation.

I like silver bullion coins and the like, but I too feel like they're not much of an investment with all the associated costs of buying them, shipping, any taxes, even the premium amount over spot price. At the end you will have paid more for what your bullion coin is worth.

Can avoid internet sales tax anymore, unless you lived in certain states, and that number is getting smaller.
They do offer free shipping for order over $99?

Look at the value 20 years ago. It's not a bad investment, it's just not a game to play everyday. Hold onto it. The Ferengi love their PMs.

I guess what I am saying is that if you are NOT a buying in volume (spending enough to get free shipping) collector, the associated fees I eluded to previously would be cost prohibitive. Many people just buy one ASE for the year and might get other issues over a period of time instead of buying a lot at once to take advantage of shipping discounts.
Oh and LOVE the Ferengi reference! I'll go count my 500 bars of gold pressed latinum! lol

You're absolutely right in regards to the shipping costs needing to be taken into account. Let's face it, there are only a few moments in time when the prices really fluctuate, the rest of the time it's pretty sideways in a $10 range. When you're already paying over spot for the coin, plus your shipping and then factor in selling fees, you actual need like a $10 swing to make it even worth your while. Heaven forbid you jumped on board on the up swing. If you happen to be a long term player and you're in it at the right times and are patient, you can make a good return. If you're in it for the short term, you're kinda screwed. Only a very select few will be lucky enough to break even or make a profit. IMHO.
I've only been in it long enough to be in two major moves. The first one I was involved in and did well, the second I was sidelined leading up to now. I personally don't feel like we are in to conditions yet to see a return to $50 silver but the potential for that down the road is real. So I'm still interested in trying to get back in although I'm keeping a close eye waiting for it to drop back down first. Waiting for people to start pulling out thinking that everything's ok again, when it's not. That's the time to get in and hold for the next big swing. General rule, don't buy on the up but always be buying on the way down. Being that we're at 50% all time high anywhere below this is not too bad of a time to purchase as long as you're not adding all the before mentioned costs on top. IMHO

@beem - not bad. I avoid the bars because they aren't easy to move. I have two LCS that won't buy bars over 5 oz. Not bad, but those that bought 10 years ago haven't yet broke even. Too much of a crap game for me.

That's a good positive return beem, I sold all my silver ETF when silver reached $27-28 high. Holding only some physical silver.
Waiting for silver to drop back down more before picking up again, will see how this new administration do with PM.
