Debating between the two of these, leaning more towards Coin 1.

Both graded MS-65, both the same price, the first by PCGS, second by NGC. I prefer the color and luster of coin 1, but prefer the strike of coin 2. The second one too me looks like it just makes a 65, with the strike assisting there, but is closer to a technical 64+. Thoughts?

Coin 1: PCGS MS-65

#1 has a lot more eye-appeal and nicer color. Plus, the mark on the buffalo's face on #2 is distracting to me.

i actually like number 2. It may be the lighting, but number 2 seems to have the better strike.

I like the obverse from Coin #2 and the reverse from Coin #1.
So the choice is up to you.

Totally agree. Die state is more evenly paired and strike is stronger on #2. Nice reverse strike on #1, bit of weakness in the shoulder, but I do like the overall eye appeal of #1.

I slightly weaker strike on #1 obverse, in combination with some Die Deterioration is what I see in the hair, and back of the neck as well.

Not a nickels person, but I also pick #2. I find the obverse marks on #1 more distracting than the reverse marks on #2, but the pictures could be a factor too.

I have viewed this topic five or six times now. After viewing both I would like the first coin more, but then the hair would bug me. It has bugged me less on each subsequent view. I think at this point I can overlook the hair and say the first coin would be my first choice.

I prefer #1. To me, luster is an important factor. While I also like strong strikes, I weigh luster over strike. While you should proceed on what YOU like, I believe "The Market" also weighs luster over strike. Separately, the color in the photos of #2 turns me off.

Lovely choices either way - a very fortunate situation for any collector. I would be proud to own either so let us know which you choose.

Nailed it!

In response to a few others, @jbuck, I agree, the more I go back to it, the obverse on #1 is less and less problematic for me, even though it wasn't that problematic to begin with. However, the more I look at #2, the lack of luster for a MS65 is a setback.
