I was going thru a pile of Quarters I've collected for a month or so, an across this 1977 D, it weights 5.7 grams an it's VERY CLEAN!! Is this a Transitional Error attended for 1976.. Thank you!!   |

That is a nice one to pull out of circulation. It weighs what is supposed to weigh as a Cu-Ni clad. The 1976 silver quarters can weigh practically the same when allowing for minting tolerances and the precision of a scale that only measures to tenths of a gram. If you think it is on a silver clad planchet, you will have to verify silver content another way.

Ok, thank you! I'm just curious what another way to verify silver, weighing them is the only way I know with out damaging the platchet thank you

If OP is referring to the possibility of a 1976 silver planchet, those are silver clad with a listed weight of 5.75g in the RedBook versus 5.67g for Cu-Ni clad. Those are awfully close to confidently separate by weight. I agree with Spence. A view of the edge might be informative. |

I was assuming "transitional error" implies a question about the 40% silver clad planchets of the 1976 non-circulating commemoratives as opposed to pre 1965 90% silver planchets which are 6.25g as you said.
