That is a nice one to pull out of circulation. It weighs what is supposed to weigh as a Cu-Ni clad. The 1976 silver quarters can weigh practically the same when allowing for minting tolerances and the precision of a scale that only measures to tenths of a gram. If you think it is on a silver clad planchet, you will have to verify silver content another way.

@mm99, is there a copper layer evident anywhere along the reeded edge?

If OP is referring to the possibility of a 1976 silver planchet, those are silver clad with a listed weight of 5.75g in the RedBook versus 5.67g for Cu-Ni clad. Those are awfully close to confidently separate by weight.

I agree with Spence. A view of the edge might be informative.

Coop,

I was assuming "transitional error" implies a question about the 40% silver clad planchets of the 1976 non-circulating commemoratives as opposed to pre 1965 90% silver planchets which are 6.25g as you said.

Madman,

Is that what you were asking about? That your coin might be silver?

Thank you too all that replied !! Yes I was asking if this 1977 D was a silver clad platchet. This Quarter just caught my eye at first glance, looked different

You can try the tissue test, but I think your coin is normal.
