it was in a corrosive environment for sometime..

If anything it would have to be a 1955 D over S
Far as I know there is not an 1955 S/D. I know it was probably a typo.

Partly your photography (image is not sharply in focus), partly the roughness of your coin. I'm not sure netter photos will help. Keep searching!
