I've gotten about $1000 of machine wrapped salt river bay 2020 quarters from my bank over the past year and another $1000 of rolls that contain a very high volume of mixed 2020s and circulated coins in about a 50/50 ratio. Somehow, I have gotten precisely zero Ws in any of these. Today, I picked up $200 in quarters, and it was all 2020 American Samoa. I didn't get too excited about it because I've had such terrible luck so far, but I decided to hunt half of it, and sure enough, zero Ws. The American Samoa were almost all BU uncirculated coins with two random circulated State Quarters mixed in with the $100 I searched.

Anyone have any idea what the deal is with this? Could I just be phenomenally unlucky and getting batches that were poorly mixed with Ws by the mint, or could it be that another collector dumped a huge pile of their rejects that made their way to brinks or Loomis and got re-rolled, only *appearing* to be new from the mint, when in fact they were already hunted?

Is it worth even checking the rest? I still have about $200 of the SRB and $100 of the Samoa that I was thinking of selling on Ebay.

Those two State Quarters sound an awful lot like somebody's replacements. Think you can break even on the Bay? I don't really know what people pay for rolled 2020 quarters, but I imagine it isn't astronomical.

@Numisma Break even? Pretty sure I'd break even if I just dumped them at my bank, seeing as I paid face...

Seems they go for about 13-15 bucks a roll on ebay for people hunting Ws.

I would search them, but that is my own personal opinion; you just never know what you may find.

Search them. Why not since you did search so many already?

Could be where you are located. The "W" quarters are released only in certain areas, usually near large airports from what I've read. Last I heard, there are only two places in my state that are release points, Charlotte and Morrisville (Near RDU airport.)

Go through what you have and keep up the hunt. There's one or more in the wild with your name on it. It's a numbers game which sounds like you are due.

You're looking at some serious weight...sorry about the previous luck, and it's a bummer to find searched rolls. Good luck breaking even or more ;)

@Bump interesting. I am located in a major city not too far from a major international airport, but maybe the problem is that I bank with a small local bank?

The problem with releasing them near an airport is that most of them will fly far far away, especially in "flyover" states where there isn't much traffic going In as much as out to tourist destinations like Florida or California.

Looks like you are in MA. The only release point in Mass. is Boston. Small banks may be a problem only because they don't turn over supply as quickly.

At last check, Florida is the only state with four release points (perhaps due to large volume of tourists as mentioned above.) California has three. Most states only have one city, while a few have two.

I've found four W-mint quarters since 2019. I don't CRH and all mine have come in change. Three of them are UNC, the last one has circulated a good bit.

I wish you well in your hunt!

@Bump yep, I'm in Boston. I have had absolutely atrocious luck with Ws. Probably hunted close to 25 boxes worth of quarters since they were released in 2019 and have found a grand total of two of them.

Be glad you've found two. I've found absolutely zero so far.

It's hit or miss depending on how they broke the mint bag and rolled them up.

If they just did half the mint bag then the top half would be W heavy and the bottom half would have nothing.

If they do the whole thing at once it's a decent even mix in the rolls.

As far as I could tell they just filled up the mint bag, dumped in a couple ice machine scooper full of Ws on to and sent them out the mint door.

So if the armored carrier is doing a half rolling or something like that, half would be W heavy and the Half left behind would have nothing or near nothing.

At least this is my observations hunting quarters. Sometimes they end a run of circulated and top off with new uncirculated even they don't care it's all just work and inventory to them.

Luck of the draw really. If you keep looking you'll find them.
