I know from reading some of the posts on these boards what some of you like to collect but it is scattered through many threads. I haven't really seen a thread like this on these boards and thought it would be nice to have a place where people can let others know what type of coin or sets they are very passionate about and why. Even if you are collecting many types of coins or sets at once...what coins are you drawn to the most? Which is your favorite? Lincoln Cents? 3-Cent Pieces? 20th Century Type Set? Indian Head cents? Peace dollars? What is your poison? And don't forget to add why you are drawn to this particular coin or set. Do you just like the look or is there a deeper story behind it such as a collection being passed down to you? I hope this thread catches on and maybe with some good answers you can inspire others to begin collecting something they never really thought of.

Absolutely love Lincolns. To me there is nothing better then a sharply struck penny in the teens. This is my main goal before I move on to other sets. Well, I have other sets going, but most my money goes into cents.
I have so many years left of collecting that I look forward to almost all the sets! I just love my hobby ;)

Lincolns....there's no other series that offers such a diverse number of years, mintmarks and varieties. I selected it because it's such a complicated series...the scientist in me is completely drawn to it. I only "dabble" in other coin series, a little of this and a little of that.

Well, I mainly collect Roman Imperial coins -- at this point, the "goal" is to get one from every emperor. In addition to that, I am slowly building an early US commemorative type set (1892-1954) and a 1909-date Lincoln set.

My favourite US coin is the IHC, which I am slowly building into a decent date set, thanks mostly to assistance from KurtS whose knowledge of these has been invaluable. Reason I like these? I think there is just something so 'American' about them, the design is so simple, yet it says so much. However, being an Aussie, my all time favourite coin series to collect is the Australian Shilling. Again for similar reasons to the IHC, it is a simple design that says so much about early Australia. The first reverse, common across most of the early pre-decimals, is Australia's first coat of arms. This coat of arms didn't last for very long at all before it was changed. Typical of the Aussie attitude to everything, 'she'll be right mate', no one actually got around to changing the design on the coins. The second reverse, a rams head, is synonymous with Australia's growth through agriculture. Our merino sheep providing some of the best wool in the world. Also for me it is a link with my childhood and early adulthood, growing up in the country, working on farms and in the shearing sheds.

I really like the IHC too. If I ever seriously branch out, this will be my next series.

IHCs are a favorite of mine, as are the Capped Bust Halves. I especially like 19 century US coins in general due to signs of handwork in die-making and resulting varieties on the coins. And of all the varieties, overdates are my favorite as they suggest the transition of die making processes over time. Since US overdates are now rather tough to find, I have turned my attention to overdates on world coins. I wanted to get in a big thanks to Sean for sending me a great 1933/2 Australia Penny overdate! I'll post pics sometime soon! Here's a recent show find: the 1906/5 Sweden 2 Ore (a rare coin to stumble across)

Indian Head Cents.
Why?
Because my dad gave me a partial whitman folder of them for my 13th birthday. I have loved them ever since.

I got back into coin collecting in 2007 when gold & silver prices were taking off. I purchased quite a lot of pre-1933 U.S. gold coinage and various types of silver. Being from Illinois and a lifelong fan of A. Lincoln, I got into Lincoln cents about 15 months ago and have focused on wheat cents ever since. Lately my main objective is 1st era Lincolns (1909-1933). These are challenging to find in EF and above, with a good strike, and with no problems. Challenging if you're on a budget that is! My latest pick up was from ebay on a '12-D. I got it for VF money ($22 total) and it was sold as an AU coin. Anyway, it's a solid EF and is soaking in Thad's special sauce right now. I'll post some pics when it's done with it's bath.

Early copper (Colonials, Large Cents, Half Cents) I love our early history. Who may have held/used this coin! But I also collect U.S. type coins pre-1964.

I've loved U.S. type coins as long as I can remember. I started collecting at six and my dad was away on business pretty often. Many times he'd come home with a coin for me. He was clueless but was usually a type piece. After 30 years or so of collecting I decided to complete at least one set in my lifetime. I decided on business strike Two Cent Pieces. Why? - it's only a 10 piece set although the small motto and 1872 are tough. That and the fact that one of the FIRST coins my dad ever got me was an 1866 Two Cent Piece. I'll be buried with that coin someday. Well, I've completed the set FIVE TIMES NOW. I reckon I've got at least 70-80 total and will still buy them if the price is right and it catches my eye. My dad passed away years ago but every time I see a Two Cent Piece I think of him. I'm good with that. Of course I've amassed a lot of other coins over the years. Have a nearly complete set of wheat cents and don't even pursue them but if the price is right I'm on it. Love my type coins, U.S. paper money and dabbling in World Coins but Two Cent Pieces will always be special to me.

I love my Eisenhower dollars most because the two Eisenhower dollars my dad gave me sparked my interest in coins. I love collecting modern coins from circulation each year since it is something I have done from the beginning.
