Is this coin authentic? I have heard a lot of news about this type of coin being counterfeit. Thanks *** Edited by Staff to clarify topic title. Titles are important! ***

Yes - That is an authentic coin. I don't know where you heard about this type of coin being counterfeit but that is not true. Common date large cents are readily available in this grade (VF through AU) and this is a $50 piece.
Very early date large cents (1793-1801) ARE counterfeited often and are rarely seen in grades above VF.

Thanks bherring1964 I am new to the older large cents. Good to know that I got a pretty good deal as I just paid $39 for it on the bay.

I opened this thread and before I read a word, I saw the pic and thought "now that's a nice cent..."
Congrats on the good deal. I'd pay 40 bux for one that nice, all day long.

They are faked quite commonly so I would check the weight first. It could be a toned replica. Look at ebay for replica large cents. They do exist. I bought one for reference awhile back and came to find out although looking good, they are quite lighter than a real one. Usually the fakes don't have any wear and I see a little on yours so with just that, I would guess it's original, but you never know.

Best bet would be to weight it.

If the weight is correct, next step is send to ANACS. This is a nice coin if genuine.

How much should it weigh?

Check here: http://www.coincommunity.com/us_lar...ded_hair.aspNominal weight is 10.89 grams. With the wear this coin shows it could be as low as 10.50 grams. This type of large cent is very rarely counterfeited. From your pics I can assure you with 99.99% confidence that it is genuine.

10.89 grams. If you do not already have a RedBook, I would recommend not buying another coin until you purchase it- that book contains all the basic info you need(like weights). As for authenticity, I would not worry too much about it being fake. I see nothing that stands out, the wear is even and the patina is fine. I would not recommend getting it graded as that would pretty much be a waste of your money(the grading fee would more than cover the cost of a Redbook } as this coin would grade EF and be worth about $50 or so.

There's a BIG difference between replica coins and counterfeit coins. The link is a clearly marked replica. That is NOT a counterfeit coin.

Thanks, I do have a RedBook and I didn't even think about the weight being in it. I appreciate all the input on this and I will def weigh it when I get it in hand. I'm relatively new to collecting and inherited or found most of my collection. So I'm just now getting in to buying pieces that really interest me. Thanks again.

Even if that coin was not marked as a replica, anyone comparing that to a picture of a genuine example should be able to see that it is not authentic. As soon as I looked at it, I knew the design was not right. Obvious fakes should be easy to weed out, the obvious ones are everywhere and anyone with a RedBook can figure them out.

After examining it a second time, I notice "blotchiness" as if there was a chemical applied to replicate a natural BN coin. I am pretty confident this is a replica.

That previous link might not be a great one, but these are the ones to look out for http://cgi.ebay.com/Replica-1854-Ha...PY_W0QQitemZ a href= https://www.coincommunity.com/go/link.asp?target=https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/350151408013 target= _blank rel= nofollow 350151408013 /a QQihZ022QQcategoryZ4182QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem This is the guy I bought from and like I said, his large cents are lighter (and thinner) than they should be. He does have some very convincing coins out there. I have been studying his for awhile. Probably the best (or worst depending on how you look at it) China dealer out there. Put a little wear and toning to it, I don't see why it wouldn't pass. Plus not many people would not even question it. Because as bherring said "this type of coin being counterfeit but that is not true". And no, his coins do not arrive marked "replica" when you get them. Mike
