The fakes are out there. There's a lot of pages on a web site that show the Chinese faking operation showing presses & dies. A display of fake coins at my coin club was absolutely unbelievable. Many fooled my semi-trained eye. Guess I'm in between an untrained eye and a totally trained eye.I'm afraid to buy any coin now. Remember,"A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing."

The hysteria over conterfeit coins is reaching new heights! When an obviously genuine, low dollar large cent generates this much hype, the hobby suffers.
soldier4Christ you have nothing to worry about. You got a fair deal on a nice coin.

Wow a lot of controversy about this coin. I will hopefully get it in the mail today and I will def weigh it for accuracy. I will prob take some new pictures when I receive it and post them. The seller has a ten day money back guarantee policy so if it is in fact a fake it will go back home and I will search out a more reputable dealer.

I watched an elderly gentleman at a show a few weeks ago sell his entire collection because of the articles in Coin World. He stated he has had enough. Sold every coin he had. Does it make me nervous, yes it sure does and I have been in the hobby for 40+ years. Counterfeits or altered coins have been around for years though, I picked up a 1909SVDB back in the 70's that is fake. Problem today is the vast numbers of them being sold on ebay then passed around at local coin shows. Most dealers will tell you that they see the counterfeits at most every show they do trying to be sold as real. I have seen every series of coins attacked so none of them are sacred so to speak. I do NOT see anything suspicious regarding the OP's coin. I simply put the link in so that we all know that common coins as well as rarities are being hit. Soldier, weighing the coin will help but not tell you for certain. I recently was told that the gold coins that are being counterfeited were almost perfect in weight and size. Be careful my friend.

That's good. Weigh it for sure. If it's underweight, send it back. A seller without a return privilege IMO has something to hide. Avoid these sellers.

I have one about a grade lower than this one. The only difference is my date is located to the left about 1/32 and higher so the top of the one touches the bust. It appears original to me. nlp

Your beautiful large cent is not a fake (99% certain based on the picture). Look at lots of large cents on the Heritage web site or another large firm web site and then compare to yours. Nothing to worry about IMHO. By the way, the large cent fakes coming out of China have a "too perfect" look and the reverse die isn't quite right. After some practice and learning, you'll figure out how to tell, but just the same...if you are going to start collecting any kind of coins beyond pocket change, get a Red Book, a good magnifying glass and a scale, they really come in handy

Why would anyone knowingly purchase a fake US coin from China is beyond me. You're just keeping them in business.

The 1853 large cents were frequently copied, but I have no reason to believe your 1854 is not genuine.

Where you guys are seeing red warning flags, I'm seeing a challenge. Accept that challenge. Numismatics is all about separating the wheat from the chaff, with the unique difference that we all have dissimilar opinions concerning what's "wheat" and what's "chaff."
So we have the additional challenge of coping with potential counterfeits. This is your opportunity to further your knowledge (and this hobby is all about knowledge). Most counterfeits are easily identifiable to a trained eye, so your job is to become that trained eye. You'll need the skill to correctly interpret photographs sometimes lacking in quality, and the discipline to walk away when the results aren't conclusive - or the willingness to evaluate and take a chance when you think it's called for.
These are skills which will serve you well in numismatics, whether there are counterfeits in the mix or not. I think we sometimes lose sight of just how important a good accumulated body of knowledge is to the pursuit of this hobby. Nothing in numismatics which is worth having comes easily - if you're just throwing money haphazardly at slabbed coins, you're an investor, not a collector.
Collectors sweat the details.
For the record, I'll be very surprised if Boris' coin is a fake. I'd have taken that chance without a doubt.

I received an email that it went in the mail today. I will post as soon as I receive it in hand and follow up once I get a chance to weigh it. I can weigh it at work (one of the perks of working for a pharmacy!) Does anyone know where I can get a good scale of my own...fairly cheap. God Bless, Brad P.S. Like everyone here the suspense is killing me. I want it in hand now Guess I just have to wait

I bought a scale like this for under $20: http://cgi.ebay.com/100-x-0-01-Gram...ew_W0QQitemZ a href= https://www.coincommunity.com/go/link.asp?target=https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/250307034555 target= _blank rel= nofollow 250307034555 /a QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item a href= https://www.coincommunity.com/go/link.asp?target=https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/250307034555 target= _blank rel= nofollow 250307034555 /a &_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72:1205%7C66:2%7C65:12%7C39:1%7C240:1318%7C301:1%7C293:1%7C294:50 Mine's a different brand/seller but these are great to have and for the price can't be beat. As with any online purchase, remember to look for high positive feedback sellers with a good return policy. I pay through PayPal with a credit card for extra security.

Thanks... I guess what I meant to ask was what would be a good cheap scale? As I have never purchased one. Thanks for answering that question as well.
