Hi,

My Mom found this coin a number of years ago and we are trying to determine what type of error it might have, if it's an error. Franklin's head looks like a blob. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Jackie

Appears to have some environmental damage, larger sharper image would help.

The blob side is very shiny and difficult to get a clear picture of. The back photographed perfectly. Any suggestions to angles to shoot from would be appreciated.

It is Roosevelt's head (bust/profile) not Franklin's

Franklin Delano Roosevelt - so it still works. They're just on a first name basis.

Color is off, but this gives a good representation of the blob aspect.

@jazz, the last pic is great. Can you please tell us the diameter? I wonder if this isn't a die cap of some sort rather than damage.

Here is a link for comparison:

Yeah, those pics sure are interesting, it looks more towards a mint error in my opinion since the reverse looks mostly normal. I'm sure coop could weigh in sometime as to what is going on here...

This is probably the best I'll be able to get photo-wise. The golden color along the right edge is sun reflection but it's a good representation of how thick it is in spots. Hope this is helpful. There are definitely scratches on the coin which is enhanced with the macro lens. Roosevelt looks like he has a cauliflower ear.

Looks like a struck through a deteriorating capped die. Note the rim? It is not rounded, but saucer like. Nice striking error. If it were damaged, the reverse would also distortion. It is normal.
