Hey all. I have 20 rolls of pre-64 dimes that I was thinking about moving to free up some $ to buy some other coins. From looking at ebay, it seems like they sell for about $45-50 per roll. Is this a good time to sell them or do you think that waiting a bit might see a spike in the price of silver? Also I have 7 rolls of pre-64 Wash. quarters, 7 Mercury dime rolls, 2 Franklin half rolls & 3 1964 Kennedy rolls. Sell or wait? Thanks Edited by Forum Mom to move from Main Coin Forum to Modern US Coin Forum

I don't think you will get an answer on this one. I think you need to make that call based on your personal situation. If I were holding silver coins like that I'd be hanging onto them. Only because financial matters are not making me think of turning the silver into cash to pay a bill or get something else I might want. It depends on what you want or need, not what anyone else thinks you should do. This is like asking if we think silver will go up or down. The answer to that, is probably .... Yes!

What Wheezydog said. If the Mercs and Franklins are above VF and not just common dates it might be worth pulling them and selling separately. Either way any good price you might get on ebay is going to be decimated by fees. You might be better off selling them for slightly less elsewhere. Prediction of the silver market is something that many claim to be able to do but I have yet to see it turn into reality. Most hold junk silver in reserve as a commodity to be liquidated when needed. SO if you are in "need" liquidate. If you are in "want" then think twice.

Mr Rick,
If you want to sell on here, I would like to buy your rolls of franklins at 10x + reasonable shipping. Just something to think about if you do plan to sell.

In fact, better still, why not let everyone on the site have a crack at them all first? A buck isn't a lot to pay for a silver Roosevelt; even the junior collectors could afford that, and they just may take you up on the offer for various reasons.
The upside: you sell them off and don't get dinged by fees. Upside 2, you help a fellow collector, especially in the case of a junior collector.
That makes it better than win-win in my books.

No problem. If I decide to sell them, I'll offer them here first.

Quote: No problem. If I decide to sell them, I'll offer them here first I know I'd take a dozen or so, as I could not afford an entire roll. My big purchase recently was 60 V nickels on ebay. I got 4 1883's. 2 with Cents and two without. It was a nice score that filled most of my folder.

Hmmm, still up in the air on this. I can buy a 1916D Mercury to finish my set with this $, so I guess the question is, in your opinion, is it better to have 20 rolls of silver Roosevelts or 1 1916D?

In my view, that would depend on the condition you can get the 1916D in.

I believe the answer is in your question. What would make you feel better, having the 20 rolls or a finished set? Of course, it also depends on if you were able to purchase the 1916-D without liquidating something. Like wheezydog said, "I think you need to make that call based on your personal situation."

I don't think the wife would appreciate me buying a $1,500 coin out of the checking account. Sooooo, it's either sell those rolls or look at a gap in my Mercury set. After some deliberation, I think that at this point silver is more likely to go up than down, so I'll bide my time.
Thanks for the input

I'd trade the extra silver or cash it in for the 16D in a heartbeat. Make sure the 16D is certified, though. Too many counterfeits out there...

Not that money is everything mycrob, but do you think in a couple of years the 16D would appreciate more than the rolls?

You have to remember that the silver market is unpredictable, especially trying to predict silver prices in the next few years.
