At first I thought this was PMD but the more I looked at it the more unsure I was. I am just not sure if not PMD how it happened. It almost looks like pieces of the planchet just fell out. There is no other imperfections on the coin. Please advise. Thank you in advance.

After looking at my own photo again I did see what looks like die cracks on the ref "T" and another missing piece on the "E".

Appears to me as a strike through error, But I will wait and see what some of the more knowledgeable members have to say.
I've been collecting for a couple years... Favorite Coin's are Standing Liberty quarters, Working on my type set | Coffee, Corvettes, Coins & the CCF what could be better?

Or a lamination? But the obverse also looks altered opposite that area? So it maybe damaged.

An focus of the missing part to show the structure of the material and less glare of the opposite will be well appreciate.

I already see some ex-foliations due to the opposite part damages by hit (perpendicular or angle). Interesting.
