Hi all I have just started going through a few coins given to me a couple of years ago. A couple of coins in I found this quarter with a cracked die on the obverse. Thanks Merv

Certainly not a cracked die. A die crack perhaps, but maybe only a scratch.

I'm on the fence on this one too @frog. It really looks a lot like a scratch (damage).

Looks like a scratch to me as well.

It is a raised line on the surface of the coin & not a scratch into the surface, so as a raised line it must have been caused by a scratch or crack in the die itself.

If it is raised, which it looks like to me, yes, it is a die crack or gouge.

I'm leaning toward die crack. Closer-in, large and sharp photos would be welcome.

What is really needed is a better close up with lowered white balance. It looks like it could be either or from this image.

Hi all, sorry this is dragging out but I am still a newbee & still trying to learn a lot of things. (it doesn't help when you're old as well, it takes a while for things to sink in) I now think that it is probably a scratch on the die & not a crack, if it was a crack it would probably have to start from the edge of the coin & work inwards. I'll see if I can manage to get a couple of better pictures. Thanks Merv

It is a common area to find these die cracks.

Hi Merv. Check out the site Cudsoncoins.com. Check the Spike Head section. Click on Washington quarters 1932-1998. Their number SKH-25c-1994P-01 looks close to yours. If you find out it is a crack on yours and the crack does connects to rim. Then yours might be a different find. Cuds will be helpful for other issues you will run across. Hope this helps.

With Cudsoncoins you send the pictures by email to them there's no charge. JC Stevens will check them out and verify if it is a Spike Head and if so and if it's not already listed he'll list it. Follow the instructions on how to send pictures.
Click on. Attributions guide on what to do.

Firstly I want to say a BIG thank you to everybody that has commented in this thread, it has been a great help to me. I have been on the cudsoncoins site & seen so many great coin errors that I think I'm hooked. I will have to go through my collection (only a few thousand coins) and have a closer look for scratched or cracked dies. Then I'll have to check all the coins that I have in boxes, bags & tins that I have not got around to sorting. Once again THANK YOU ALL. Merv
