I want to invest in gold but not sure if I should go with older gold coins or bullion? American or world coins? Any ideas appreciated.

If it's just an investment buy the cheapest premium to spot.

I don't think you can go wrong with American gold, but British gold Britannias also have a low premium over spot. I like sovereigns despite their higher premium; they're classy, recognizable and easy to buy/sell.

Agree, American gold is a good choice. But study the premiums that different firms (including your LCS) charge!

I am not much of a stacker but agree finding it at the lowest price on easily disposable bullion is the best option. Inflation is bad now but food prices are going sky high in a couple of months. That should push metals higher.

Buy at least 1/4 oz world gold coins, anything below is high in premium. The plus is you get to collect gold from different part of the world, the minus is that your wallet gets lighter.

Although I agree with low premium stick with something recognizable. Depending on your location US Gold bullion coins or pre 1933 gold, British sovereigns, etc. you might find a lower premium on others but also have a harder resale
On Silver ASE's and 90% coins have a higher premium than generic rounds but a better resale as well

Update: So decided to go with APMEX and purchased 3x 1oz 2022 American Gold Eagles. I picked AGE because it's so well known and easy to sale if need be. I pulled the trigger when I saw that gold dropped by 50 something dollars. It's for the long haul so no worries. I will say the premiums, etc it added up to another 175+ over spot. Thanks for everyone's input.

It's wise to compare prices with the major dealers like, APMEX, SD Bullion, Bullion Exchanges, Liberty Coins, JM Bullion, Provident, etc. They all sometimes have online sales with best prices at that time. If you have a local coin store, LCS, check them out too. A little time comparing will save you money. Also coin dealers have cheaper prices if you pay by paper check or e check. They charge more for credit card or Paypal fees.
