Probably a slight grease-filled die issue. Minor and very common.

You would to polish a die pretty deep to eliminate a letter. It just a partial Grease Filled Die.

possible Greaser, but not too likely - we have seen this area of the Cent coins have a weak strike, due to the obverse shoulder/bust area as being a metal hog. (it takes up so much metal to form, it leaves not much to form the devices on the reverse.

This is a common occurrence - either Greaser or other possibilities that have been mentioned already. It is not too difficult to find coins with missing lettering/numbers.

It is a common weak area and might also be a very minor grease issue. It is a spender. John1
( I'm no pro, it's just my humble opinion ) Searched 6.5 +/- Million Cents Since 1971

How do we know it is a Struck Through Grease error? (Your probably wondering that now?) When a die is filled with grease, regardless of how much, the devices will look wider than normal. Note on the 'E PL'? devices. Note the 'E' is almost filled, the P and then L is where is there is less grease and the devices are starting to show the tapered top that is narrow on the devices. (The taper allows the coins to fall off the die after the strike) That is what we look for on the filled with grease error: According to how the angle of the grease is and how much, it will affect the devices different. Totally filled the device is prevented during the strike. That is what we are seeing and now, you see what I see on your coin. CoopHome: How does grease affect the strike on a coin? it prevents the strike up of the devices. more grease, less devices are seen. look for the wider base of the devices.
