Crazy Looking War Nickel Question! - Coin Community Forum

Shorzy Valued Member United States 51 Posts	Posted 02/14/2023 3:46 pm Hi Friends, I just purchased over 700 War Nickels and I am finding some oddities such as the one here. Is this a lamination issue (I can see a bit of lamination to the left for the mouth) or a strike through? If it was a strike through, wouldn't the strike have taken out the mouth too? But the mouth does look funny. this coin is well worn and some of the evidence of what may have caused it has been rubbed off. What happened Dearborn is that these War Nickels were changed in their composition to 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese from 25% nickel and 75% copper previously and this copper, silver, and manganese alloy was found later to be difficult to work with despite the initial benefit findings that it would still work in the eras vending machines both by weight of coin and is also checked by its electrical properties. So lamination problems and irregular oxidation of the coins are found to be common with the War Nickels specifically due to this alloy mix.
