I have a 1975 D High Mint Mark Jefferson nickel with a Cud on the obverse that looks like it has a hard glue like substance on the surface. I would like to remove it before sending the coin to be graded but I don't want to damage the coin since it looks like it's in fairly good condition. Any ideas on how to do it or should I just pay extra to have NGC conserve it?
Thanks in advance.

Pure acetone, but I'm not so sure that's even worth grading.

are you sure that's glue on the obverse and not a Cud?

At 9 o'clock is a Cud. The yellowish stuff is what the op wants to remove.

I'm pretty sure I want to get this graded since it's selling on ebay right now for $1K and without a Cud it sold for $750

Does anyone have experience using acetone on coins? Does it alter the surface of the coin?

Note on the reverse the area opposite the Cud on the rim is showing a slight weakness on the reverse. So it is a Cud, small but it is a Cud. (Not glue)

I think he's referring to the yellow crap which may be glue or maybe pvc.

Good long soak in acetone won't hurt.

Yes, long soak in 100% acetone is likely to remove the crud--no scrubbing, just a soak then rinse gently in distilled water.

Acetone is completely safe to use and will not affect the surface or toning of the nickel. I suggest soaking for 12 hours, checking for residue and if not completely satisfied, try another 12 hours.

You can also try Xylene (available in most hardware stores) as it sometimes gets better results and is equally safe to use. Xylene has a bit of a stronger odor that some people find offensive.

Nice find, btw. Pretty sure it's a match, as Tunnioc pointed out, to CU-5c-1975D-02.

Very nice Cud! Too bad about the glue residue, but it should be easily removed by a good Acetone bath overnight.
