PCGS - There are all kinds of tab toning, each offering a unique and beautiful pattern - and a visual sign of the coin's authenticity. This 1940-S Mercury dime features strip tab toning, created when its storage blocked air exposure, leaving behind its signature striped look. Do you have any tab-toned coins?

Check out Tab Toned Coins on ebay.

At first I wasn't so keen on the toning, but the more I look at it the more I like it! I wouldn't pay a premium for it because of the toning, but it has its appeal.

It would be helpful if there was an explanation for the term "tab toning," which I was unfamiliar with. Here's a definition from another PCGS article:

Quote:
Tab-toners originate from albums, cases, or holders that house coins underneath a plastic or cardboard tab, most famously, the hard-to-find U.S. Silver Dollar Society albums and original card inserts for commemorative half dollars.
