Hi, I have this piece I cannot identify.

I believe it is French/German, possibly from Metz. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hmm... not much to go on there.

What's the reverse or second image? I can't tell if it's a design or the incuse of a bracteate.

Is there anything in the quarters of the cross?

I agree this is a tough one.

Metz has some deniers with a crescent in opposite angles of the cross. But I, too, can;t figure out what is on the other side of the coin (for Metz it is usually either a bishop, Saint Stephen, or a temple in the 12th - 13th c.).

Ted, if the coin were rotated 180 degrees in the second pic, might those mostly parallel features toward the bottom left be wrinkles in a robe? If so, then perhaps the head is flattened.

Yes, could be. There is also a feature that looks like a head wearing a mitre over to the right. But they don;t seem to align.
The section on Metz, Bishopric in Numista has examples of most bishops, but I know there are coins missing. The other two bishoprics in that region, Toul and Verdun made similar coins.

Identifying what is in the corners of the cross would be helpful. I can't tell if they are letters, symbols ....

Edit: Any chance it is this: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=7632690
Each example of this type that I can find has the cross "ghosting " through to mess up the obverse design to varying extents.

And another type with combinations of objects and letters in the angles of the cross: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=9507226
(you need to rotate the obverse photo 90 degrees countercloskwise to get the bishop's profile facing left and the crozier in the correct direction
