Color is uniform throughout- on obverse, reverse, and all around edge, (not sure if this is clear in photos). Thanks for your help with this one.

No, looks like the U took a hit and got damaged.

with environmental damage. Looks like a metal detecting coin and the soil was quite acidic. The "U" took a hit, post mint damage.
