Macrinus served under Emperor Caracalla as a praetorian prefect. He declared himself emperor days after Caracalla being stabbed to death by a Roman soldier. He was the first emperor to come from an equestrian background. It is believed he was accepted by the senate due to the fact they disliked the often erratic Caracalla, and Macrinus having the loyalty of the army at the time.

I should have included this coin with my Diadumenian post

Outstanding coin. Great obverse portrait that has held up well, and Fides looks pretty awesome on the flip side.

Spectacular specimen, Canefan. Not a strictly realistic portrait, but in comparison to the usual treatment on denarii...truly remarkable! Certainly the nuances show a distinct lean into realism. Beautiful toning and sharp details on both obverse and reverse. Awesome!

My favorite detail of the portrait is the furrowed brow. To quote Shakespeare, 'uneasy is the head that wears a crown'. I believe his forehead bears witness to this perfectly.

I totally agree with you, Canefan. The furrowed brow is great elemental highlight to this beauty. You see brow-lines similarly on coins of Trajan Decius. I'm sure such a detail is meant to convey exactly what you suggested.
