Hello, I found a 1984 Dime with what appears to be an insect's leg sticking out of the metal of the Dime. I have posted it on ebay in hopes that some coin collector there would send me a message either telling me that it's genuine or that I'm full of bologna, but no one's messaged me yet. Please take a look at this and let me know what I have here. Thanks so much! *** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark to Title. It's very important to have in the title. *** Edited by GodisGood2Us 04/16/2023 11:39 am

Hi, I posted the close-up pictures in the ebay listing (They are the last couple pictures of the set). I'm trying to find them on my computer but can't seem to find them. If I can find them I'll upload them. Thanks...

@gig, first welcome to CCF. Second, it looks to me like that insect leg (or whatever it is) is stuck to the surface of the dime, perhaps with a clear glue or varnish.

to the CCF If it was on there when the coin was struck, it would be imbedded into the field of the dime. It looks raised in which case it would have been added after the dime was minted.

to the CCF Agree with @Spense that the 'insect' is likely a substance stuck to the surface, perhaps glue. If you soak it in acetone it will likely disappear.

It looks see through, so it might be Elmer's glue holding that what ever to this victim coin? Post strike alteration.

Thank you! I will find some acetone and soak it to see what happens. I appreciate everyone's feedback.

It's been a while, but I finally got around to using acetone like you recommended to try to clean the dime. The acetone soaking didn't remove whatever was one the dime but it made it turn light bluish color so I can tell it's some kind of varnish or superglue that got on this coin. Thanks for helping a newbie! PS... I found a new interesting dime and listing it on ebay... *** Edited by Staff - Please review the rules that you agreed to when you registered. ***

The acetone will not work on everything. Is sure it is foreign material on this coin and seem to be an insect leg. If an insect of any kind will be between the planchet and the hammer at 60 tones strike in the case of this coin will be no mark on the coin, just dirt residue of a poor insect.
PS: Do not worry, the insect will have no time to suffer.

I am suspecting PMD on this one.
Errers and Varietys.
