I've been digging through some of the unmarked rolls from the Lincoln hoard I bought & this coin turned up. Definitely been through some hard times. Looks like it might have spent some time in the ground, damaged when it was dug up, & then harshly cleaned to remove corrosion. Sorry about the pictures, especially the reverse. When it's tilted just right it almost looks like the remnants of a VDB so I tried to make that stand out. Upon further examination I don't think it's a VDB.

Finding a 1909-S LWC is really something, but that poor coin has been abused in a lot of different ways. It hadn't seen a lot of circulation wear, but as you said, it's been through some hard times!

I saw a friend of mine last night. Turns out he doesn't have an 09-S & would like it as a hole filler. He might change his mind when he sees it...

Might have to enlarge the hole to make it fit--if it's out-of-round.
